Permethrin During Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

by on May 28, 2012

Premethrin has been categorized by the FDA as a pregnancy category B, although no evidence of harm fertility or harm has been noted in tests performed on mice, rabbits, and rats.

However, since there are no well-controlled and adequate studies on pregnant women, this medication should only be taken in the benefits outweigh the possible risks. This is because reproduction studies in animals are not always predictive of the human response. Since premethrin has evidence of tumorigenic potential, it is not suggested that nursing mothers continue to breast feed while taking this medication. This is because the drug can be excreted in human milk, so mothers should consider discontinuing nursing temporarily while using this medication.
