Vancomycin and Alcohol

Vancomycin, like other antibiotics, is not recommended for consumption with alcohol. This is because even moderate drinking is thought to decrease the effectiveness of the drug, and the side effects may be increased.

Some of the side effects that can occur when vancomycin and alcohol interact, in addition to efficiency issues, include:

  • Severe stomach pain
  • Muscle weakness
  • Pain
  • Severe tingling
  • Bruising
  • Numbness
  • Changes in urination
  • Hives
  • Difficult breathing
