Viagra and Alcohol

by on July 15, 2012

Although drinking alcohol while taking Viagra (Sildenafil) is not expected to cause severe problems, many health experts warn men against it while being treated for sexual dysfunction. Unfortunately, many men neglect these warnings. Some people even erroneously think that drinking alcohol before sexual activity can help enhance sexual desire and performance.

What Studies Say

Viagra and alcohol can both cause vasodilation (widening of the blood vessels). However, clinical studies suggest that this combination is not likely to result in major problems. Studies show that Viagra does not cause any change in plasma levels when used with alcohol. Unlike other ED medications like Cialis and Levitra, Viagra appeared to be the safest when combined with alcohol.

Although clinical studies provide reassuring results, individuals taking Viagra should try to avoid alcohol or at least limit their consumption to a moderate amount. Theoretically, the combination can lead to overly dilated blood vessels which can cause symptoms that include:

  • Dizziness
  • Rapid, irregular heart rate
  • Low blood pressure

While these side effects are rarely reported, it is best to be aware of the possible drug interactions.

Alcohol and Erectile Dysfunction

Although alcohol may not cause adverse reactions when combined with Viagra, many healthcare experts do not recommend drinking alcohol, especially in large amounts, while taking ED medications. In some patients, erectile dysfunction only appears as a symptom of other underlying medical conditions such as cardiovascular diseases which necessitate avoiding alcohol altogether.

It is also suggested that alcohol can negatively influence the erection process. Alcohol can cause a ‘hangover’ effect that includes headaches which can possibly make natural erection difficult. It is also thought that alcohol negates the natural process of achieving and sustaining an erection. This may either reduce the effectiveness of any ED medication, or even make it useless altogether.

Some healthcare experts also suggest that alcohol can increase the possibility of certain side effects of the medication. As a matter of fact, these two substances share the same side effects that include headache, facial flushing, dizziness, and stomach upset. Consuming too much alcohol while on Viagra increases the risk of these side effects. This can even make normal sexual activity impossible.

Prevention

To avoid possible drug interactions, individuals taking Viagra should consult their healthcare provider about their alcohol consumption. Each person experiences a unique situation and your healthcare provider is in the best position to give you recommendations. In some men, alcohol may be contraindicated because of other medical reasons. Feel free to discuss with your healthcare provider your alcohol consumption.
