Cialis and Headaches

Like any other medications, Cialis can cause some side effects. According to its manufacturer, headache is among the most common side effects, which has been reported by about 3 to 6 percent of Cialis users. People taking this medication daily or regularly are at an increased risk of experiencing a headache.

Headaches are also dose dependent, meaning it is more common in people taking higher doses of the drug. Usually, this side effect goes away after a few hours even without medical intervention. If this side effect does not go away or interferes with your daily activities, consult your healthcare provider right away. Available resources do not explain how Cialis causes headaches.

Managing Headaches While on Cialis

As mentioned above, a Cialis-induced headache often resolves even without treatment. However, if this problem becomes troublesome, your healthcare provider may recommend dose adjustment. Your regular dose may be lowered to reduce the occurrence of headaches. Work with your healthcare provider to find out the minimum effective dose for you.

  • Headaches are also more common in people who take the drug on an empty stomach. Not eating enough can trigger headaches, so make sure that you eat properly before taking this medication.
  • Do not drink large amounts of alcohol while taking Cialis. Healthcare providers recommend limiting alcohol intake to 5 alcoholic beverages per day. Too much alcohol can produce side effects, particularly headache.
  • For some people, taking over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen would be more helpful. Your healthcare provider may recommend taking every four to six hours to prevent headache. Be sure to take the pain reliever prescribed for you, and do not take more than the recommended amount.
  • If the headache becomes severe and negatively impacts your daily living, consult your healthcare provider about Cialis use. He or she may consider switching your medication.
