Doxycycline during Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

by on June 3, 2012

All medications that contain doxycycline, including Vibramycin, Oracea, Adoxa and Atridox are assigned to the FDA—or Federal Drug Administration—pregnancy category D. This means that it has been clinically proven to cause harm to the unborn fetus.

Pregnant women should not use medications that contain doxycycline during pregnancy unless all other options have been exhausted and the benefits clearly outweigh the risks. Women who are breastfeeding should not take doxycycline, or they should stop breastfeeding during their treatment and for at least seven days afterward. The use of doxycycline during the second half of pregnancy often causes irreversible tooth discoloration and damage to the fetus.
