Pravastatin During Pregnany & Breastfeeding

by on April 20, 2012

Although clinical studies in animals do not indicate that Pravastatin increases the risk of birth defects, the drug could theoretically cause problems during pregnancy because cholesterol is necessary for normal fetal development.  As pravastatin provides no significant benefit during pregnancy and because there are theoretical risks, it is recommended that pregnant women do not take Pravachol.

Although levels of pravastatin in breast milk are low, Pravachol use is not recommended for breastfeeding women. This is because of a concern with disruption of infant lipid metabolism.
