Singulair Dosage

Patients may be given a unique dosage of Singulair (montelukast) based on a number of factors that include the patient’s age, medical condition being treated, and other medications currently taken.

Below is the usual Singulair dosage for specific health conditions. However, it is possible for you to get a totally different dosage. Do not adjust your dose or stop taking this medication without approval of your healthcare provider.

Treatment of Asthma

The recommended dose for treatment of asthma in adolescents (15 years old and above) and adults is 10 mg taken once a day. For children between 6 to 14 years of age, the recommended daily dose is 5 mg taken once a day. For young children between 2 to 5 years of age, the recommended daily dose is 4 mg taken once a day (chewable tablet or oral granules may be used). For children aged 12 to 23 months, the recommended dose is 4 mg or one packet of oral granules taken once a day.

When used for treatment of asthma, Singulair doses are generally taken in the evening to avoid nighttime asthma symptoms.

Treatment of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction

Singulair may be used to prevent tightening of the airways due to exercise. When used for this purpose, the recommended dose for adolescents (15 years old and above) and adults is 10 mg taken at least two hours before exercise. For children between 6 to 14 years of age, the recommended dose is 5 mg taken at least two hours before exercise. Singulair should not be used more than once in any 24-hour period. If you have already taken Singulair for asthma or allergy, do not take an extra dose for exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.

Relief of Allergy Symptoms

The recommended dosage for relief of allergy in adolescents (15 years old and above) and adults is 10 mg taken once a day. For children between ages 6 to 14 years, the recommended dose is 5 mg once a day. For children 2 to 5 years of age, the recommended dose is 4 mg taken once a day (chewable tablet or oral granules may be used). For younger children between 6 to 23 months, the recommended dose is 4 mg or one packet of oral granules taken once a day.

When used for treatment of allergies, Singular dose may be taken at any time of the day. However, if using Singulair for treatment of allergies and asthma, take your dose of this medication in the evening.

Administering Singulair

Singulair is supplied as regular tablet, chewable tablet and oral granules. The regular tablet should be swallowed whole with a full glass of water. It may be taken with or without food. On the other hand, the chewable tablet must be dissolved in the mouth before swallowed. You may drink water or any liquid after.

Singulair oral granules may be placed directly in the mouth, or mixed with a spoonful of soft foods such as applesauce, rice, carrots or ice cream. It should not be mixed with any other foods or liquids not mentioned, unless approved by your healthcare provider. Open the packet only when ready to be used. Once opened, it must be administered within 15 minutes. Do not save opened packet for later use.
