Seasonique and Weight Gain
Seasonique is an extended-cycle prescription oral contraceptive pill. Studies show that most birth control pills can cause weight gain in a small percentage of women. Studies, also report that weight gain while using birth control pills is a myth.
According to the Seasonique drug fact sheet only 2.4% of women discontinued taking this pill because of weight gain. That is a relatively small percentage of weight gain as a side effect. Most weight gain while taking birth control pills is due to water weight, diet, lack of exercise or an estrogen effect from the pill causing fat cells to become larger but not more numerous not the pill itself.
If you would like to take Seasonique but are afraid of gaining weight here are a few suggestions:
- Diet. Eating a diet high in fresh fruits, vegetables, grains and fish is a great way to control your weight while giving your body what it needs to be healthy. Whole grains that contain at least 5 grams of fiber are perfect for helping a sluggish bowel get back in shape. Avoid or limit caffeine, tea, soda, white sugar, salt, fatty or fried foods and red meat. Cut back on dairy products or switch to almond or soy milk.
- Exercise. Low impact exercise such as walking, tai chi or yoga helps keep your body strong while building muscle that can help burn fat. Try to add at least 30 minutes of exercise at least 4 days per week.
- Water. Adults should drink at least 64 ounces of water per day for proper hydration. Water is what your entire body needs for life and cellular happiness. Spring or filtered water is best. Also, many people find that their hunger is actually triggered by thirst. Increase your water consumption if you regularly drink coffee, tea or sodas. These drinks cause the body to eliminate water and can lead to dehydration.
If you notice unexplained weight gain, while taking Seasonique talk to your healthcare provider for more information. He or she may be able to check you for other medical conditions that cause weight gain, suggest lifestyle changes or recommend a different birth control pill or method to try.
